"Did I Miss Anything?" by Tom Wayman

Nothing. When we realized you weren’t here
we sat with our hands folded on our desks
in silence, for the full two hours.

Everything. I gave an exam worth
40 percent of the grade for this term
and assigned some reading due today
on which I’m about to hand out a quiz
worth 50 percent.

Nothing. None of the content of this course
has value or meaning
Take as many days off as you like:
any activities we undertake as a class
I assure you will not matter either to you or me
and are without purpose.

Everything. A few minutes after we began last time
a shaft of light suddenly descended and an angel
or other heavenly being appeared
and revealed to us what each woman or man must do
to attain divine wisdom in this life andthe hereafter
This is the last time the class will meet
before we disperse to bring the good news to all people
on earth.

Nothing. When you are not present
how could something significant occur?

Everything. Contained in this classroom
is a microcosm of human experience
assembled for you to query and examine and ponder
This is not the only place such an opportunity has been
gathered.

but it was one place.

And you weren’t here.

"How Was School Today?" by Meena Holland

Wonderful! Justin Bieber came and gave
us a concert! He brought Usher along with him.
Then he asked me and my friends to record
a song him in a recording studio.

Horrible! The entire school caught on fire
and we had to go to Africa and meet a
chinese person named Kang. He told us
to go back home.

Wonderful! When we went outside, I got robbed
by a clown. Then he took me to the circus where
he worked at and I became an astronaut.

Horrible! Our class chicken died and we
had a funeral. After that we went to Dairy
Queen. They ran out of all their ice cream
except the chicken flavored one so we all
had to eat chicken flavored ice cream, which
only reminded us of our class chicken. :(

Wonderful! My best friend and I found a
unicorn named Phabio and we flew to his
house, made out of Lucky Charms, at
the end of the rainbow.

Horrible! I found out my teacher's were a
gang of robbers and that they were gonna
rob the school!

"Dreams" by Langston Hughes

Hold fast to dreams
for if dreams die
life is a broken-winged bird

life is an empty plate
stored away in the cupboard.

"The Rose That Grew From Concrete" by Tupac Shakur

Did you hear about the rose that grew
from a crack in the concrete?
Proving nature's law is wrong it
learned to walk without having feet.
Funny it seems, but by keeping it's dreams,
it learned to breathe fresh air.
Long live the rose that grew from concrete
when no one else ever cared.

"The Light That Grew From Darkness" by Meena Holland

Have you ever heard of the light that grew
from a room full of darkness?
Proving whoever thought that light
couldn't grow in darkness wrong.
Funny it seems, but by keeping it's dreams,
it learned to stand up to darkness.
Long live the light that grew from darkness
when no one else ever cared.

My report card smiled,
showing off straight A's.
